Cadets enjoy a day onboard HMS Gloucester

Twelve cadets and staff visited our affiliated ship, HMS Gloucester. Whilst on-board the cadets had a tour of the ship and took part in various evolutions setup by members of the ships company. The cadets and staff thoroughly enjoyed the day and look forward to another chance to spend time on board before the ship decommissions next year. Many thanks to the Commanding Officer, Ship’s Liason Officer, and all the Ships Company involved for a most enjoyable visit.

Queen’s Birthday Flight

Stratford Cadets flew over Buckingham Palace on Saturday 12th June as part of the Queens Birthday and Cadet 150 celebrations. Ten cadets set out early from Stratford Unit to fly from RAF Brize Norton. The flypast was made up of 30 aircraft – 13 different types, from World War ll Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster, to modern multi-role Typhoon fighters and the Red Arrows aerobatic display team. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) led the formation, their inclusion commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Another anniversary represented in the flypast was the 150th year of the Cadet Forces with the inclusion of 150 cadets from across the 3 services onboard the Tristar as part of the Cadet 150 celebrations.

Royal British Legion Awards Evening

Cadets from Stratford Unit recently attended a cadet awards evening at the Stratford Upon Avon RBL Club. Various awards were presented on the evening by the President of Stratford RBL, Mr Pete Summerton. The cadets were joined by members of Stratford Army Cadets who also attended the evening. The Lionel Irish Cadet of the Year award was presented to Mikala Raines by Mrs Irish, Wife of late Stratford RNA member Mr Lionel Irish,in whose memory the award was presented.

Awards included the Reg Day Trophy for the cadet achieving the highest marks on a District Advancement Board for promotion to Leading Cadet. This award was presented to Rebecca Nadolski, (Pictured below)

Royal Naval Parade

Stratford Sea Cadets annual Royal Naval Parade takes place on Friday 18th September at 7pm.

We hope you will be able to join us for this important evening.

Over the past year the cadets and staff have again been working hard training for and competing in various competitions and events that make up the yearly calendar and this inspection by the Area Officer is the formal assessment of our efforts. For those parents and guests who have not been to an RNP before I have would like to take this opportunity to give you a brief outline of what is involved in the evening’s activities and, most importantly, why we have a Royal Naval Parade.

The Royal Navy by agreement with the Marine Society and Sea Cadets inspects every sea cadet unit once a year to ensure that the high standards of training are being maintained.  A serving Royal Naval Officer, Commander Jos Binns RN, will carry out this year’s inspection. We hope you will be able to join us.

Routine for the evening

1830  Staff and cadets arrive at Unit

1900 Inspecting Officer (Cdr J Binns), District Staff and guests arrive at Unit

1915  Audience given safety brief and advised of the programme and purpose of the evening

1925  Formal arrival, Inspecting Officer receives salute and inspects the Guard followed by:

Colours, Prayers, March off the guard, Inspection of divisions, Inspection complete

1955 Inspecting Officer meets VIPs. Then tours Unit with Cadet escort,

1955 – 2010 Stand Easy for cadets and guests

2015 – 2045 Evolutions                        

2045 – 2055 IO and DO/DDO/ADO review evening

Rotary Shakespeare Marathon

The Shakespeare Marathon and Half Marathon took place this Sunday with some 3400 runners taking part. Stratford Sea Cadets were involved again helping at the start line and organising the bag drop. Pictured below are Mike Raines and Barry Haywood, along with cadets at the start line. A big thankyou to both Mike and Barry who ran for the Unit raising much needed funds through sponsorship.

World Class Stratford Patron and distinguished Shakespearian actor Sir Donald Sinden officially re-opened the Bancroft Gardens following major re-landscaping works, on the morning of Friday, 24 April.

Sir Donald joined Cllr Les Topham, chairman of World Class Stratford, and other civic leaders and community representatives and opened the gardens around mid-day. The ceremony included the symbolic opening of the new canal lock gates and pedestrian bridge, with Stratford Sea Cadets providing a piping party to pipe the guests into the canal basin. The cadets were situated on the bridge which connects the gardens with the River Avon. The Cadets were also involved with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and the switching on of the Swan Fountain by local school children.
A programme of artistic events and entertainment in the gardens continued into the afternoon and weekend as part of the wider celebrations for the expanded Shakespeare’s Birthday Celebrations.

Shooting Training

A group of five cadets and PO Cook went on a shoooting training weekend to Sennybridge Army Camp from the 20th to 22nd March and had a fun packed weekend shooting at targets. The cadets where trained in using the weapons correctly and safely and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
