New Canal Bridge

World Class Stratford Patron and distinguished Shakespearian actor Sir Donald Sinden officially re-opened the Bancroft Gardens following major re-landscaping works, on the morning of Friday, 24 April.

Sir Donald joined Cllr Les Topham, chairman of World Class Stratford, and other civic leaders and community representatives and opened the gardens around mid-day. The ceremony included the symbolic opening of the new canal lock gates and pedestrian bridge, with Stratford Sea Cadets providing a piping party to pipe the guests into the canal basin. The cadets were situated on the bridge which connects the gardens with the River Avon. The Cadets were also involved with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and the switching on of the Swan Fountain by local school children.
A programme of artistic events and entertainment in the gardens continued into the afternoon and weekend as part of the wider celebrations for the expanded Shakespeare’s Birthday Celebrations.

Love the gardens or not this will be quite an historic day for Stratford with both the opening ceremony and then the dedication of the sundial by the river to the fire service and the fire fighters who lost their lives at Atherstone in 2007. The cadets will form up at the canal lock and then pipe the Britannia boat & guests under the bridge and then through the lock gates into the basin. Rig of the day – No.1′s
